Know who the Research Safety Team  building point of contact  is for your lab area(s).

Review the  Compiled Lab Safety Responsibilities in Appendix 1  in the Laboratory Safety Manual.

Contact the  building point of contact  to complete the Pre-Operational Safety, Health & Environmental Review Form (POSHER).

Ensure the Lab Safety Readiness checklist is completed before the lab can be opened or in operation. To do so you can arrange a meeting with the  building point of contact. See the Laboratory Safety Readiness and Occupancy Approval Procedure for more information.

Ensure a  Laboratory Safety Representative  (LSR) has been appointed for your lab.

Ensure a  Laboratory Safety Plan  is written and that all personnel working in your laboratories have reviewed, understood, and signed off on the plan.

Ensure a Lab Hazards Door Sign has been created for your lab(s). You can arrange it with the  building point of contact.

Ensure everyone who works under your supervision and works in your lab attends the Laboratory Safety Training, Hazardous Waste Training (if generating chemical waste), Emergency Incident Preparedness, and other hazard specific training (as relevant).  Training can be taken as a live session or online via Salute.

Ensure all lab personnel know how to access the  Laboratory Safety Manual.

Ensure proper PPE (per  PPE Standard For KAUST Laboratories ) – gloves, safety glasses, lab coats, etc. – are available and used by personnel working in labs under your supervision.

Ensure  standard operating procedures  are developed for operations conducted in labs under your supervision

Ensure your lab members are familiar and adhere to the  Service Corridor Guidelines  and Service Corridor Procedures.

Have your lab group conduct  self-assessments  of your laboratories.

Ensure you comply with the various safety programs requirements such as biosafety, industrial hygiene, laser safety, radiation safety, UV safety, etc.

Ensure you are familiar with  Research Compliance  requirements that may apply to your research.

  • Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
  • Institutional Biosafety and Bioethics Committee (IBEC)
  • Institutional Radiation Safety Committee (IRSC)

Ensure everyone who works under your supervision knows to call 911 from a landline or 012-808-0911 from a mobile phone in case of an emergency. Encourage your lab members to add 012-808-0911 in their mobile phone contacts list.

Ensure your lab members know to report any accidents, incidents and injuries to you or the lab manager immediately and to submit a  ReportIt  as soon as possible, but at least within 24 hours.
